Why This Matters
This video guides you through six most visited sites: Moraine Lake, Emerald Lake, Johnston Canyon, Lake Louise Gondola, Natural Bridges, Spiral Tunnel Photographers consider Moraine Lake one of the best views in the world. Main features of the lake are the deep azure blue of the water and the backdrop of the Ten Peaks. My map in the video shows the Valley of the Ten Peaks. There are two ways to view the lake – first, a short walk up the Rockpile Trail; second, the Moraine Lake Shoreline Trail. Moraine Lake’s image is world-famous and appears in many places, such as the background picture in Google’s Android OS, Bing, Blackberry, Palm, video game, Windows 10, 7 & Vista. It is found on the 1969 and 1979 issues of the Canadian $20 bill. Compare older bills with the new Canadian bills having transparent windows. The list of Ten Peaks Mount Fay Mount Little Mount Bowlen Tonsa Peak Mount Perren Mount Allen Mount Tuzo Deltaform Mountain Neptuak Mountain Wenkchemna Peak Emerald Lake is named for its bright green color, which comes from rock particles in the water similar to the particles in Moraine Lake. Mainly the size of the particles is what creates varying shades of blue and green. (For more scientific explanations about wavelength, light scattering and colors in detail, please watch this video link The wooden bridge above one section of the lake also serves as a viewing platform. Two things you can do: 1. canoe rentals. 2. take a walk. The Emerald Lake Loop is 3.2 miles, an easy hike that goes around the lake shoreline and also gives a view of an area unusually cleared of trees due to an avalanche. No cell coverage in many spots at Emerald Lake, so be prepared.. The Johnston Canyon’s catwalks are suspended from the canyon walls,. The main attractions on the walk are two large waterfalls: the Lower Falls and the Upper Falls. One place to stop along the way is this solid metal bridge, as it is the best place to enjoy the Johnston Canyon Lower Falls by walking through the small tunnel on the far side of the bridge. However there are sometimes many people waiting at the bridge. This video shows what it looks like after you enter the short tunnel or cave, you can judge yourself whether it is worth a wait. There is a small viewing area within this cave which is extremely close to the water from the Johnston Canyon Lower Falls. Unlike the Banff Gondola which is only a sightseeing gondola, Lake Louise Gondola is used by a ski resort in winter and for sightseeing in summer. There is no trail to walk up to or down from the top of the Lake Louise Gondola. There are two purposes to ride the summer gondola: 1. discover the best views of Lake Louise for relative low effort 2. explore the hiking trails. There are two short trails at the top of the Gondola. 1. Kicking Horse Pass Viewpoint trail and 2. Pika trail. You can purchase just the gondola ticket or you can purchase a combined ride and lunch which includes a buffet lunch at the Lodge of Ten Peaks. Natural Bridge is an impressive natural rock formation over the Kicking Horse River. There are a couple of different points to view the formation, with interpretive displays explaining the physical processes at work. For the Spiral Tunnels, there are two – the Upper Spiral Tunnel and the Lower Spiral Tunnel. The main viewing platform for this ingenious bit of railway engineering is off the Trans-Canada Hwy. At the Lower Spiral Tunnel Viewpoint, there are maps, diagrams and a miniature model display to explain how to view the tunnel. It’s not completely obvious how it works without some study! This video will explain. We were lucky enough to be there as a train was coming through, which helps! Timestamps
