Kitchen Garbage Disposal: Leaking, Replacing, and Installing New

What This Video Shows

In this video I show you how to replace a leaking kitchen garbage disposal with a new one. Replacing a kitchen disposal is actually one of the easier plumbing tasks you can tackle yourself, especially if you do not need to replace the mounting ring and other connection hardware that is already installed in your sink. If the existing mounting assembly is still in good condition, the new disposal simply twists onto the same mount, and you reconnect the drain line and dishwasher connection if applicable. The most common reason a garbage disposal starts leaking is corrosion of the internal seals over years of use. Water seeps through deteriorated rubber gaskets and drips from the bottom of the unit. When you see water pooling under your kitchen sink, check whether it is coming from the disposal body itself or from one of the connection points. Connection leaks can sometimes be fixed by tightening fittings, but a leak from the disposal body means replacement time. I walk through the entire removal and installation process, including disconnecting the electrical wiring, removing the old unit from the mounting ring, and attaching the new disposal. The whole job took me less than an hour, and the new disposal fit perfectly on the existing mounting hardware, saving significant time and effort compared to a complete installation from scratch.
