2 Best & Quickest Ways to Find the End of a Roll of Tape

How We Selected: We examined options using hands-on testing, cost analysis, and practical results. Factors in our assessment included time required, tool accessibility, ease of execution, material cost. Brands featured did not pay for or influence their inclusion.

Finding the end of a roll of tape, especially clear tape, is one of those small frustrations that wastes disproportionate amounts of time. In this video, Dr. David Zhang demonstrates five different methods, highlighting his two favorites that outperform all traditional tricks.

The Two Best Methods

Method 1: Use absolutely nothing. This technique requires no additional tools whatsoever. By running your fingertip around the roll in a specific way, the edge of the tape catches on your skin and lifts. The trick is in the speed and angle of your finger motion.

Method 2: Use a wire. A thin piece of wire (such as from a twist-tie or paper clip) is run around the circumference of the tape roll. The wire catches the edge and lifts it cleanly. This method is fast and works reliably even on very smooth, clear tape.

Three Additional Methods

The video also covers using a paper clip as a permanent tab marker, folding the tape end back on itself after each use to create a tab, and bending or flipping the tape to locate the edge by feel.

Prevention Is Best

The simplest solution is to fold a small tab at the end of the tape each time you use it. This habit takes one second and saves minutes of frustration later.

You may feel frustrated when you cannot find the edge, but do not give up. Watch, learn, and find your edge.

Why Common Tape Tricks Fall Short

Finding the end of a roll of tape is a common problem. Before explaining the two best solutions, it helps to understand why the widely used alternatives are not ideal.

The paperclip method is commonly recommended, but a paperclip can be easily lost and it does not follow the tape as you pull it. Folding the end of the tape over is another popular habit, but you waste the end piece of tape every time you do this. You may also try bending the tape or flipping the tape to locate the edge by feel, but doing so can make the tape dirty. Both of these workarounds have real drawbacks that the two preferred methods avoid.

Method One: A Reusable Tape Scrap

Method One uses absolutely nothing except a small piece of tape you already have. Before putting the tape back in storage, tear off a small piece and place it across the cut section of the roll. Next time you use the roll, just pull that small piece away to expose the end.

The key advantage over folding is reuse — the same tape scrap can be used many times over, so no tape is wasted.

Method Two: A Wire Holder That Follows the Roll

Method Two uses a thin electrical wire. Bend it to form an L shape, loop it around the tape roll to form a ring, and twist the ends together. The L-plus-ring structure can slide easily along the roll.

When you pull the tape, the ring is naturally pushed back. After you cut the tape, the end rests on the L-shaped wire. To use it next time, lift the L-shaped wire, separate the tape from the wire, and the ring is pushed back again as you pull. The device stays with the roll and does not get lost.
