  • These sites make good stops to fill a few hours between major attractions

The Chain of Craters

The Chain of Craters Road winds through Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, passing numerous volcanic craters in various stages of geological evolution. Along this route you will encounter the 1974 Lava Flow field, Puhimau Crater, Lua Manu Crater, Ko’oko’olau Crater, and Hi’iaka Crater Basin. Each crater tells a different story of volcanic activity spanning centuries.

These are not the dramatic erupting volcanoes of documentary films, but rather quiet geological monuments to the island’s volcanic past. The craters range from shallow depressions to deep pits, some filled with vegetation, others still bare and lifeless. Walking the short paths to each overlook gives you a sense of the cumulative power of the volcanic forces that built this island.

Rainbow Falls

Rainbow Falls is located in Wailuku River State Park near Hilo. The waterfall drops about 80 feet into a large natural pool surrounded by tropical vegetation. The best time to visit is in the morning when sunlight strikes the mist at the right angle to create the rainbow that gives the falls its name.

The viewing area is easily accessible from the parking lot — no hiking required. This makes it a perfect stop for visitors of all ages and fitness levels. Behind the falls is a cave that, according to Hawaiian legend, was the home of Hina, the goddess of the moon.

The Painted Church

St. Benedict’s Catholic Church, commonly known as the Painted Church, was erected in 1899 by Father John Velghe, a Belgian priest. Without any professional artistic training and using only house paint on ordinary wood, Father Velghe decorated the church interior with remarkable biblical scenes and architectural illusions. The painted columns, arches, and tropical plants on the walls create the illusion of a much larger and more ornate structure.

The church is still active and visitors are welcome to view the interior. It is a small but memorable stop that takes only 15-20 minutes.
