My Own Pickpocket Experience in Europe: How Can You Avoid It?
What This Video Shows
In this video I share my personal pickpocket experience from traveling in Europe. I had heard all the warnings about pickpocketing in tourist areas, and I even followed my own five-step prevention strategy religiously. Yet it still happened to me. I share exactly what went down, how the thieves operated, and the five steps I recommend so you can protect yourself better than I managed to.
If you have never had this happen to you, believe me when I say it is an adrenaline rush experience you will never forget. And definitely not in a good way. I made this video because I want to help other travelers avoid the same experience and not let petty crime ruin an otherwise wonderful vacation.
Why This Matters
Pickpocketing is one of the most common crimes affecting tourists in popular European destinations. The Vatican, the Colosseum in Rome, Las Ramblas in Barcelona, busy metro stations in Paris, and other high-traffic tourist locations are prime hunting grounds for professional pickpockets. A single incident can ruin your entire trip, leaving you without cash, credit cards, identification, and the peace of mind needed to enjoy your vacation.
My Five Steps to Avoid Pickpockets
Step 1: Be constantly aware of your surroundings. Pickpockets operate in crowded areas like tourist attractions, public transit systems, and busy open-air markets. When you feel a crowd pressing in around you, that is exactly when you should be at your highest level of alertness.
Step 2: Carry only minimal valuables. Leave expensive jewelry, watches, and unnecessary electronics at the hotel. Carry only the cash you need for the day and one credit card. Keep your passport locked in the hotel safe unless you specifically need it that day.
Step 3: Use inside pockets or a money belt. Back pockets and open handbags are essentially invitations to skilled thieves. Front pockets with zippers, neck wallets worn under your shirt, or cross-body bags with secure closures are dramatically harder for pickpockets to access without you noticing.
Step 4: Split your money and cards across multiple locations. Never keep all your cash and cards in one pocket or one bag. Spread them across different pockets, a money belt, and perhaps your companion’s bag. That way, even if one location gets hit, you are not left completely stranded.
Step 5: Trust your instincts without hesitation. If something feels off, if a stranger is standing way too close or if someone creates an unexpected distraction like bumping into you or asking you to sign a petition, move away immediately. Pickpockets absolutely rely on distraction and close physical proximity to do their work.
How Professional Pickpockets Operate
The technique I experienced was classic team-based distraction theft. One person engages your attention, perhaps by asking for directions, while another team member does the actual picking from behind or the side. They work in coordinated teams and they are incredibly fast at what they do. By the time you realize something is wrong, your wallet has already been passed to a third person who is walking away in the opposite direction.
The Reader’s Digest Wallet Experiment
Interestingly, Reader’s Digest magazine once conducted a fascinating experiment where they dropped 12 wallets containing a phone number and cash in public spaces across 16 different cities worldwide. Helsinki returned an impressive 11 out of 12 wallets. Mumbai returned 9. New York and Budapest each returned 8. At the bottom of the list, Lisbon returned only 1 out of 12.
Quick Tips for a Safer European Trip
Be especially vigilant at popular tourist sites where crowds naturally form and pickpockets know tourists will be distracted by the sights.
Watch for common scam setups including the petition scam, the friendship bracelet trick, and the dropped ring scam, all of which are designed purely to distract you.
Report any incidents to police even if you believe nothing will come of it, because reports help authorities track patterns.
