Very Long Term Parking at San Jose Airport SJC
Very Long Term Parking at San Jose Airport (SJC): A Budget-Friendly Strategy
Key Takeaways
- San Jose Airport (SJC) long-term parking can cost $22 per day, adding up to over $300 for a two-week trip
- Off-site parking lots near the airport offer rates as low as $6 per day, with shuttle service to the terminal
- An even cheaper option: park at or near the airport for one day and have a friend or co-worker pick up your car at their convenience
- The Courtyard hotel area near the airport has parking that is walkable to the terminal or accessible by shuttle
- For very early departures when public transit and rideshares are unreliable, driving yourself may be the only practical option
The Problem With Long-Term Airport Parking
When we took a Europe trip lasting more than two weeks, we faced a common travel dilemma: how to get to the airport. Our flight departure time was very early in the morning — too early to ask friends for a ride, too early for the VTA light rail, and we did not trust that a taxi or limo service would show up on time.
That left driving ourselves to the airport. But at $22 per day for SJC long-term parking, a 15-day trip would cost $330 just for parking. That is a significant chunk of money that could be better spent on the actual trip.
Strategy 1: Off-Site Parking Lots
Several off-site parking facilities near San Jose Airport offer rates around $6 per day. These lots are typically located just outside the airport perimeter and provide free shuttle buses to and from the terminal.
The video shows the route to one of these facilities near the Courtyard hotel. You exit the airport drive and make a right, following signs to the Courtyard area. The parking is right there — you can see the cars parked in the lot. From there, you either walk to the terminal (it is close enough) or take a shuttle that runs about every 30 minutes.
At $6 per day, a 15-day trip costs $90 instead of $330. That is a savings of $240.
Strategy 2: The One-Day Park and Pickup
Here is an even cheaper approach that I have used successfully: drive to the airport, park in the regular parking for just one day (the minimum charge), and then have a co-worker or friend pick up your car at their leisure sometime during the next day or two.
This works well because:
- You pay only one day of parking (around $22)
- Your friend picks up the car whenever it is convenient for them — no need to wake anyone up at 4 AM
- You give them your parking ticket and they drive the car home or to their place
- When you return, they either drop the car off at the airport or you take a taxi/rideshare from the terminal to wherever the car is
The total cost is one day of parking plus perhaps a thank-you dinner for your friend. Far cheaper than two weeks of parking fees.
Tips for SJC Airport Parking
If you do decide to use the airport’s own parking:
- Arrive early: The long-term lots can fill up during busy travel periods
- Take a photo of your parking spot: After two weeks, you will not remember where you parked
- Check for online coupons: Some airports offer discounts for pre-booking parking online
- Consider the economy lot: It is farther from the terminal but cheaper than the garage
Other Transportation Options to Consider
While driving yourself was the only practical option for our very early departure, for normal departure times you might also consider:
- Light rail: VTA runs to the airport area, though connections can add time
- Rideshare (Uber/Lyft): Works well for normal hours, but availability at 4 AM can be spotty
- Airport shuttle services: Door-to-door shared van services
- Having someone drop you off: The classic approach, if someone is willing and available
Each option has trade-offs between cost, convenience, and reliability. For extended international trips with early morning departures, the park-and-pickup strategy gives you the most control at the lowest cost.
